You were close. The difference you are referring to is due to the arrangement of the valves. Traditional small block Ford heads alternate between intake and exhaust the same way across the head (from left to right: Ex/Int/Ex/Int/Ex/Int/Ex/Int). Traditional small block Chevy's have a valve configuration that alternates on each head (from left: Ex/Int/Int/Ex/Ex/Int/Int/Ex).
