The only thing better than the 8.8 is the Ford 9" rear end, but you don't need that. Why do you want to change?, there are excellent upgrades and/or replacement carrier units available, i have just a basic upgrade of a 31 spline trac-lok, with an added steel to help it lock up, i run 95W-140W gear oil with NO friction modifier, I have butt-whooped my car into the low 11's launching on the moon with nitrous with a standard motorsport clutch and never have had a problem, as a matter of fact i ran mid 12's with the stock unit with the above mentioned fluids and never had a problem there either. You have a stong unit from the factory now...stay with it, it works great.
