One more try....draw two curves on a piece of paper. One inside the other, like the tires on a car taking a right turn. The outside tire will have to rotate more often then the inside tire in order to keep up. If the axles are locked together, the one that has to rotate more often will drag along because it it rotating at the same speed as the inside tire. In a Detroit Locker or an Auburn there is a ratchet device that will keep that from happening.
