Could be a piston, too. Ground out the plug wires one at a time until the noise almost goes away. Then you will know which cylinder it is. Next, pour several ounces of 40 weight engine oil into the cylinder. crank the engine over several times with the coil disconnected. Instal the plug, and start the engine. If the noise is gone, it's a piston slap, or a collapsed skirt. If the noise remains, it's a rod.
