Changing gap can effect idle quality quite a lot. Regardless, your prev idle actually sounds too high, as mentioned by blueneonman1.

Are the new Autolites coppers or plats? If they're coppers, I wouldn't have dropped the gap, as they have *a bit* less resistance than plats. Dropping gap too much can make things get bumpy.
