Your buddy needs to seriously think about where he wants to go with the car, how much he loves it, and how long he plans to keep it. Also a considertation is how mechanically skilled he is. A v8 will go in there nice and easy, however, you will need to swap everything over from a v8, and that is a LOT of work.
That 6 is a crappy engine, they have head gasket problems at 100k( gauranteed failure-I know from experience) However if he is persistent upon keeping it, send him over to 3.8mustang.com. That message board has a lot of die hard 6 banger mustang folk who can tell you what to do. FYI a brand new mustang is rated 14.4 in the quarter mile, and a "notchback" mustang with a 5 speed from 87-93 stock is known to go low 14's because they weigh so little. Don't get too much of an ego till you race one of these....good luck
