It was estimated at 40 yards not 400 on the last one.

I disagree about telling distance from a mushroomed bullet. Unless you know several important factors, powder charge, distance, barrel lenght and what it hit, bone, clothing etc. In the field no way.

RBatson... There are two different .223 rounds. One is a .223 Remington (SAAIM) and the other is 5.56 NATO. The Remington was the older issue, NATO new. Both are military issue, your dad is right.

I have not heard the police say if it was a .223 NATO round or a Remington .223.

There are two .308 rounds too. .308 NATO and .308 Winchester.
