I wouldn't use the bat method if I were you. The only real flaw on my car is where the previous owner attempted to do the same thing you were talking about on the rear fenders. I remember talking with the dude I bought the car from over the phone as he explained to me that the fenders were the only real flaw on the car. He said "it looks like someone used a bat to roll the lip of the fender." It didn't come out really bad...but it is a flaw. I guess when I have the car squirted I'll see how much effort it'll take to fix it. But I'm surprised you need to roll the fenders for the 17in. rims. I had them on my 87GT with no problem. It must be due to the conversion kit. Good luck!
