I don't have the link, I am sure someone does, but a guy basically started cutting apart different oil filters and did a general analysis of the different brands.

The Fram had a thinner case, cheaper insides, and less filtering element than Motorcraft, AC Delco, Purolator and the like.

Since I am willing to pay the $3 qt. difference for synthetic, might as well buy a higher quality filter to go with it.
