no the shaft wouldnt be making the noise, but the lack of oil on the bearings, rockers, and other moving parts sure would make alot of knocking

thats happened to me before, and it destroyed the bearings. So check the pressure, and if there's none, then its time to pull the motor, replace the bearings, oilpump, pickup and shaft. And inspect the crank for damage.
