if you want to mod, the 5 liter is definently the way to go; it is easier to work on, easier to find parts for, and produces more power, in a lighter car. if you do want a 4.6L, and want power, get a 99+, as the 96-98 model year was the first for ford, and they hadn't really figured out how to get a reasonable amount of power out of the smaller engine.
