I DONT have aftermarket pistons, and run 1.7's on top of the e-cam, you'll be fine, i have some comp cams springs i bought without retainers, i'll have to look for the part# if you want it.
my stock retainers were smaller then the aftermarket's, but still run on the car today with no problems.
So i spent about 70$ on the springs, and gained some hp.
