I used the tripoli, white rouge and jewlers rouge on mine. (GT-40) You will of course need to use a buffing wheel to make it work. Make sure that the intake is as smooth as possible before starting the polishing work. If you have any deep gouges in the metal from the sand paper, it will take a lot of work to get it smooth. As far as keeping it looking good, I just wipe it down with a metal polish (flitz or wenol works really well) I have a post on the blue oval lounge with some pics of my engine compartment if you want to see how it turned out. (note: the car has been sitting since October without being cleaned so I am sure that I can get it to look better. Also, make sure that you wear safety glasses and some old clothes. The buffing compound goes everywhere!!! Good luck.

Best time so far = 60'=2.021, 1/8=8.366 at 86.37 mph and the 1/4 was 12.926 at 108.44 mph.
