Tighten up the TV pressure cable (I assume this is an AOD and not an AODE). That will make all of the shifts happen much later. Standard setting is to have the cable taught at idle and then have it move exactly the same amount as the throttle afterward.

If you have the AOD HP kit, you should install the high RPM regulator in the tailshaft. This allows for higher rpms and much later shifts.

With these two, you really shouldnt need to play around with the shifter.
