![]() Taking the cover off and changing the fluid probably isn't a bad idea, but if you just want to know if you have gears, try this. Put the rear of the car up in the air, but not supported at the wheels. Put the tranny in neutral and then spin your wheels by hand. Count how many times your driveshaft turns for one revolution of the wheel. If it spins about 3.5 times for one wheel revolution, you probably have a 3.55 gear out back. Get it?

![]() jacking up the rear and turning the tire one revolution and counting the revolutions on the driveshaft only works if your posi is in great shape. Both wheels have to make 1 complete revolution.
If your posi is fried and only 1 wheel turns counting the revolutions wont work.

Good point, I hadn't thought about that. I guess he can jack it up and try it, but what's the odds of the clutch packs being in good shape in that car? Probably not too good.

if only 1 spins, the posi is shot?

![]() If both wheels spin, the clutches/sliders are good enough to hold with the wheels in the air, and almost zero load.
![]() As far as the test goes, if both wheels spin, it's a very easy way to figure out what gears are back there. I always mark the driveshaft with a grease pencil, inline with a landmark on the diff. case. Works pretty good!

![]() really you should be able to tell by the way it goes through the gears, especially if its stock, especially if you'v owned other 5.0's.
