Default Re: 302 vs. 289

289 to 302 darn near everything will bolt back and forth. They didn't change the balance on the 302 till around 1980.

The main difference between the 289/302 is the stroke. Same bore, but the stroke is longer on the 302 [3 inch]. Bore is the same.

The early 289 had a 5 bolt bellhousing. That was 65 only. But, I'm sure there were some early 66's with them too.

What will fit??? Anything you want to. Depends on how much $$$ you want to spend or how much time you want to spend.

To get it under the hood and not cut the car up the 302 is by far the easiest. You can get a 347 kit for it and really wake it up too.

351W will fit, but it is tight and you run into hood clearance problem.

Good luck.
