Dropping the K-member is actually the best way to go about it; not the only way, but one of the least frustrating ways. At our shop, we'd charge 6 to 8 hours labor depending on the car & headers.
You can definitely do it in your own garage on a set of jackstands, but a lift makes all the difference in the world.
