36-degrees is probably too much for that motor. Try 32-degrees, no more than 34. Also, check it again at 3000 or 3500 to insure that you're seeing all the advance. Many of the MSD advance spring kits aren't at full advance until 2700 to 3000.

I think for starters I'm going to try what Jeff said, and change out the springs on the dist. Also check all my wires. I did notice that I forgot to put on a ground strap from the block to the chassis, so I'll get that done too. but not tonite. "I have a date with a bottle of captain." track season is over here in wisconsin. got in 1 pass, 18.68@67mph. "I think my truck pulling my 24 haulmark could do that."

Don't swap out the springs yet. What Jeff means is that the MSD distributors sometimes don't give you ALL the advance until 3500. You said you set it at 36* at 2000. What might be happening is the distributor isn't done advancing your timing at 2000. It might be taking you up past 40* at 3500. Leave it alone, and check the timing at 3500 RPM and see what it's doing. Like Andy said, check for vacuum leaks too.
