Living in Florida I understand the concern about A/C.
Several companies make an adapter that allows the swap you're trying to do. I'd first check with Vintage A/C. I think they are/were in San Antonio. There is also a company here in FL that does that too. Can't remember the name right now. But they are in all the mag's.
