I have no fears turning my 289 to 7500.
That's a bit out of my power range, but I'm not worried about problems with the RPM.
I try to keep things around 6800-7000 RPM, depending on the setup.

If your cam isn't coming in until 2800 RPM, you're definatly shifting to early. What are the specs on the cam, 2800 RPM is pretty high for a mainly stock motor.
