I'm not sure about the "every 390 got a posi" thing, although it would make sense. It could be that it has one, but it just needs to be rebuilt like mine did.
What axle code do you have on the door plate? Also, get under the car and look at the front of the center section, is the tag still on it? What does it say? The tag is a stamped metal piece about 1"x3" and will be covered with 30 years of dirt and grease. The tag will tell you 8" or 9", gear ratio, and if it has a traction loc or not. example-- 3.00 gears will have 3 00 in the lower left hand corner. 3L00 is a 3.00 gear with traction loc.
