Everybody wants to race!
Well I am very new to the scene of Mustangs and so forth...I just recently purchased my 98 GT with 29000 mi. Everybody and there mom wants to race. Everything from a 89 cutlass supreme-to a Ferrari. I have had to defend my cars honor many a time against SUV's...what is the deal? Don't people know that what they are driving isn't always going to beat somebody elses car. Granted my car is Stock, but a 89 Cutlass/Rodeos is there any meaning to this madness!!!Now on the other hand, not a day goes by that I get a mustang or three that wants to race, come on guys...I am bone stock, why would you want to waste your gas on racing a stock GT when you already know it is in the bag. Or should I be looking at it from a different angle. What I am getting at, is I don't waste time pulling up next to Vette's and so forth, cause I am confident in the outcome. I still have my pinstripping on. Pathetic right? I am just looking for some guidance from you veteran Mustang drivers. Thanks!

Be glad that everyone thinks your car is hot. Mustang GT's have a deservedly good reputation.
Go to the track and see what she does. Don't be discouraged if you're in the 15's. Some practice and a few mods will knock a full second off what you do at first. Some people here think a 4.6 GT with only a few mods will hit the 13's. I personally think it will take a lot of mods to hit 13's, but that's just me. Welcome to the Mustang fold. People are not picking on you, they just think you have a fast car. Rev ------------------ '66 Coupe, 306, 300 HP, C-4, 13.97 e.t., 100.3 mph 1/4 mi. Damn, 5.0 HO, people criticized you for 15's stock? What thread was that? I always get questioned for my opinions on stock GT times her too. Everyone seems to think stock 5.0's and 4.6's should be in the high 13's. Some, undoubtedly do run these times. My opinion is that it's rare.

Thanks guys, it was funny, just after posting the orginal message I had a newer model F-Lighting pull along side of me and I ran a half a car length ahead 3rd gear 85mph then he caught up to me and I sure he would of passed me had we not needed to stop. But aren't those things supercharged? I am bone stock, and didn't even quick shift on the run...I think he should had me long ago?

Yep, Lightnings are supposed to be damn quick. Older ones at least low 14's and newer ones faster than that. If you beat one of those, you did better than anyone would expect.

It was not a brand new one, but it couldn't of been more than a year or two old...I am very sure he would have passed me had we not needed to slow down.

The older lightnings are 15 second trucks, they only had 240hp 351W and a whole lotta truck to pull. Just a small note, the 96-98 mustang GT's are not 13 second stockers, not a chance (215-225hp), the '99 up ones are (260hp).

Just for the record, I have never stated that my car was a 13 sec car or anything for that matter other than I express it as being stock. That way when I do race, i can have either a crutch and say it is stock or beat something I maybe shouldn't of beaten and say it is stock! Get it?

what_import, I hope you didn't take my post wrong, I simply stated to clarify a suggestion that REV made that everyone seems to think that the 4.6 can run 13's. I'm one of the guys that argued that I've seen 99+ cars hit 13's and I didn't want that confused with the 96-98 cars.

No red82gt, it is alright, I now understand what you meant. Maybe one day I can come on here and say my car ran a 14 or better yet, a 13.

BTW, when I said "older Lightnings" I assumed you meant the 93-95 version.

i get a fair amount of people tring to race me to. personally i think it's because most people are aware that the 96-98 stangs are 15sec. cars stock, so when they beat us they could brag, they beat a mustang to all there friends. lets just say i enjoy the looks on their faces when i spank them now

If it were later at night and I was hungry for a race I would race a stock 96-up 'Stang. A race is a race. They are all fun.

I agree with exgmguy, even if I thought I'd get beat I'd still race just to see how much my car could hang with someone elses car. I'm sure a lot of people who come up and try to race you feel the same way, although there's always someone who'll come up fast and pass you when your not expecting it, then go tell all their friend how they beat you. I wish I had more people come up and try to race me, there's a lot of kids with hondas and acuras where I live who'll fly past you while your cruising, but get them at a light or get even with them and they'll act like your not there. |
