Well, once the coals are grey and you are done cooking and everything. Use just plain water. Pour it over the coals and stir them up with a stick.

That should take care of them. Sounds to me like you aren't waiting long enough, although a giant spaghetti pot has got to be pretty decent for putting it out, hehehe.

Just pour the water over the coals, don't dump it.
