Holley is the way to go if you want performance. They're not that difficult to tune, parts and upgrades are easy to come by, and when tuned right will out perform an Edelbrock (which is a new version of the Carter AFB). Not to bash the Edel though because it's a good carb too, but I've always been a Holley kind a guy! I'd recommend the 600 vac. secondary with an auto., or a 650 d.p. with a manual trans.
