the maximum size of your custom image is 140 by 140 pixels or 20480 bytes (whichever is smaller).

You'll need to resize your image and save it as a GIF file. I'm using photoshop and fireworks to edit my pictures, but I've seen other people with better results using other programs. Maybe they'll speak up and offer some additional advise.
