Thinking about buying a Mustang and have a few ?'s
First, I would just like to say you all have a nice site here and I hope I can learn alot from this site.
I am currently selling my 99 Jeep in hopes of getting a 97-98 Mustang. I know that I want the 4.6L but what are the differences between the GT and the Cobra? Is there anything I should look out for during those years and is the Cobra worth the extra couple grand? Thanks advance. John |

welcome to mw. the cobra is a twin overhead cam car , the gt is a single overhead cam car, the cobra has more hp, yes it's worth the extra money, but imho dont care for the independant rear supension, too much wheel hop, might want to ck into a 99+ car better heads & intake, not downing the 96-98, but 99+ has better flowing heads & intake, good luck on your choice, i chose a gt because, im broke heheh.

hmmm...I am on a pretty tight budget and cant really go into debt cause I only have a part time job that barely pays the college bills. But my Jeep is paid off and they are selling around here for about $11,500. I have seen some 97-98 GT's and 95-96 Cobra's for that much.
Any more ideas? John |

Yes, the Cobra is worth the extra money. It makes a extra 90hp over a GT and is MUCH faster. And don't worry about the independent rear suspention(IRS) it only can on 99+ Cobra's.
IMO, I wouldn't go with a 96-98 GT....not if you looking for speed. They are dogs. Sucky heads, sucky intake. If you looking for speed go with a 99+ GT.

Well if your on a tight budget I would suggest a 94-95 GT. Then you will have the popular 5.0 V-8. Parts are much cheaper for them than they are for 4.6 liter motors. They also have much for potential. 94-95 GT's are also gettin pretty cheap. I guy I know just picked up a 95 Mustang GT convertable with leather and 72K miles for $7K

well if you get a 95 it's still a 5.0, plenty of power parts there, the 96-98 with the 4.6 , you can alway's do a 99+ head swap, it's really your call. get whatever you can afford, i havent done many mod's to my car, because of my wife's health, cancer., so im new to the mod motor's myself, my last car was a 69 coupe. good luck.

looks like I am going to have to look around a bit and get some more prices, I hadn;t really looked older than '95. I didnt know the Cobra was that much different..I always just thought it was a package, not any "real" differences.
Thanks for all the replies...pretty quick. thanks for the reply mustangII, you got return pm. John |

Welcome to the boards!
Ya, there is a TREMENdOUS diff. between the Cobra and the GT..if I had my choice, i'd rather have a Cobra! You might check out getting a 94/95.. Like they said, they are easy to mod, and they are selling cheaper. I have a 94 GT and I love it. You'd be surprised what you could do w/ the engine to bump it up. Good luck and WELCOME!
