Thumbs up Dude... I'm getting a Dell...

Ahhh,
Nothing like the smell of a new Computer....

It should be here in about a week.

The old P3 500 has been crashing bad lately and its time to put her out of her misery. And after building my last 4 systems myself, its time to do it the EASY way.

Faster computing coming to Hammer soon...

SRV1,
There are times that you can get insane DELL deals. Got my 1.8 for 550 six months ago.

SRV,
I'm an IS guy, and as I said before, I've built all of my previous 4 systems. To be honest, I do this stuff for a living, and the last thing I want to think about when I get home is a computer.

I know its quite a bit cheaper to do it yourself, especially if you go with an a non-Intel processor.

At this point, just get the system to me in working order with a warranty, and make it fast...

Basic specs are:

Intel P4 @ 2 GHz
512 MB RDRAM
60 Gig HD
Optical mouse
standard keyboard
4 USB ports
10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (Cable Modem)
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Digital Sound Card
Harman Kardon HK-395 Speakers with Subwoofer
48x Max CD-ROM Drive
Win XP
17 inch flat screen monitor
64MB DDR NVIDIA_ GeForce4 MX™ Graphics Card with TV-Out

Shipped to my door including shipping\handling\taxes for $1,200

I'll be transferring my CD-R and my HD from my old unit and I never use DVD on the computer as I have the big screen downstairs, so I didn't opt for those extra CD additions.

I wanted to get the new ATI Radeon 128 MB video card option, but the addition was a little pricey... I think I'll wait 2 months and watch the price go down to half in the local CompUSA...

Two things:

First, when you get it, don't try to use the Network option in the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to move your files from the old one to the new one. It won't work, and will leave you angry.

Second, the iPod, which I still contend is the best MP3player/hard drive there is, is now available for PC's, and is sold on Dell's website.

Take care,
ÅChris

Hey Chris what exactly is the iPod? is it just for computers or can you use it elsewhere? Im kinda kicking myself for not buying a mp3 playing deck for my car.

So Hammer you bult all your own computers and decided to go back to a Dell? In my experience I dont think im ever going back after our family buying prebulit ones from gateway and Dell I built my own and am soo impressed with it.

Later,
Nick

It comes with headphones, but you can use it anywhere that has input jack(s). I use it in my truck, my stereo in the living room, my Mac, I even get asked to bring it to friends houses when there is something going on. It goes with me everywhere. Hell, there's a guy in NYC that has 2 of them, and runs a mobile DJ business using just the iPods (no albums to carry).

Here's a link to the Apple site for the specifics:

iPod

Take care,
ÅChris

Much like cars, the satisfaction of building a system and have it humm on all "8 cylinders" is a great thing. I concur that in many respects, those that have the experience should build their own.

But when you're responsible for the support of several thousand workstations and the infrastructure that keeps them running, networked, and updated every day...

Like I said before, I'm computered out.
Give me the internet, games, and some email.... and I'm a happy guy.

I've had this Dell for two years almost and have had no problems whatsoever. I do a lot of graphics intensive powerpoint presentations for schools I teach and it rips them out without a hitch. The manual I just finished is 378 pages of text and jpeg files and the IBM I have at work would lock up after about 15 minutes of working on it. The Dell has never even hiccupped.
I did have a small problem with Photoshop when I first got it. It locked down for about 30 minutes when I tried to save a tiff file but I discovered I had saved it as a 700+ meg tiff file and it had a tough time converting it.
I have since learned I have no need for 700 meg picture files.
