Default 64 1/2 mustang

hello every body. I am thinking about buying A 64 1/2 mustang and wanted your guyses apinion on it.

the guy is willing to sell it to me for 3000. and willing to hold it untill I get the money. he says its all ariganal. the body is veary striaght. I couldn't find one panel that wasn't striaght. right now it is all primerd and wet sanded. it has A 200 inline engine. witch is also in good condision. still getting around 20 miles to the gallon. it is an automatic trans. the suspension from what I can tell is still preaty good. the only thing that is bad is the intirior. but other then that it is suposed to have all the ariganal crome and bopdy parts. the radio is still the ariganal.

the guy is also going to give me A 302 with it. now my question is what am I missing. if it is an all ariganal 64 1/2 mustang shouldn't it be selling for alot more then 3000. I just keep thinking I am missing something.

what do you guys think.

thanks

Sounds exactly like the deal I got on my 1965 Fastback back in 1987. Interior shot, body in primer, and said it had a good engine and trans. I bought it for $2500 and it would have been a good deal if the engine and trans were really ok. The engine had a cracked cylinder and the trans and rear end went out on me too. Also, primer hides wavy panels really well.

If the floor boards, cowl, and rear quarters have no rust, it is worth $2000 easy, but it is safe to assume the engine, trans, and rear end will need to be replaced. Also, check that the shock towers aren't leaning in and the frame rails have have no rust.

If you will be satisfied with a six banger, offer the guy $2 or $2.5K. My advice, if you really want an v8, find an v8.

Good Luck,

Jon

Question

Check the Vin # to verify whether it is truly a 64.5.The Vin should date a build code for a 64.5 to be built between March 9, 1964 and August 17,1964 to be a true 64.5.
Also you say the car is all original but you say the car has a 6 cyl.200 - a 64.5 with a 6 cyl. would have a 170 not a 200.Check carefully.

Some how those great project deals always seem to cost me more that buying a good one to start. Theres lots of parts to change to make a 6car a V8 car. Interior parts are available, but they really start to nickel and dime you. I bet you could find a fixed up 289 car for about 10k if you look, and if you think you can fix that other one up for less, I think you will be surprised.

Yes the deals are out there,be patient. It took me 6 years of looking and I stumbled onto a 64.5 Mustang,289,automatic,76,000 original miles in showroom condition, bought it from the 2nd owner who garaged the car and babied it since 1983 - I only paid $5800.00 for it!! I dont think you will need $10,000.00 - the bargains are out there.

Points to consider:

Buying a car in primer takes a sharp eye to distinguish body condition. Many primered cars look like crap when painted.

Buying a six cylinder car and getting the engine isn't the bargain it seems. You still need a lot of components to make the car a V8 clone. As a clone, it will never have the resale value of a V8 car with similar features.

The guy who owns it likely wants to dump it now that he understands all the issues concerning the car. It likely has other problems like bad floors, bad cowls, etc.

There's an old adage, you get what you pay for and this sounds like just such a case. Your prospective purchase is not a diamond in the rough, right now its just an old car.

well I took your guyses advice.

first of all I didn't know 64.5 didn't have A 200. witch this one is. second the front shock towers look preaty good. but in the back where you bolt the shocks to the boddy is all rusted. and acording to the vin the car is an early 65. but the pink slip says 64.5, so I told the guy off for trying to sell the car to me for 3000. and he lowerd it to A grand. but I still walked away.

now I am looking at A 65 that has been parked for 3 years with A total car cover.(kinda like A bag) it's allready A 289 but it is not running. still needs alot of work but the guy said he would let me have it for 400. I am still thinking about it.

any ways I just wanted to thank you guys for saving me alot of money and head acks.

thanks
