Post Paxton SC

This guy at work is rebuilding his engine and has a supercharger that he wants to sell me. He says it's a Paxton V-4? I don't know exactly but he did say Paxton. He says it makes 10-12#'s but he says it needs a rebuild but his friend does them and would rebuild it for around $400. He says he'll sell to me for $600 (+$400). Should I do this? I know him pretty well so I trust what he says, but maybe you guys know more info on these SC's. I never heard of a V-4 or VR-4, not sure what he said. I'll see him on Sat. about it.

The Vr4 was Paxton's initial race blower. It's a beefed up version of the SN93. It still has the quiet ball-drive mechanism but can flow 1,500 cubic feet per minute and 12-15lbs. of boost. This blower will need Paxton's PaxtaTrac fluid and optional oil cooler to reduce it's self contained oil temperatures. The blower also goes by the name Novi GSS, but don't confuse it with the Novi 2000. If you could get the whole thing going for $1000 it would be well worth it. Does he have the brackets and oil lines? How about the oil cooler? Also you're going to need to bump up your fuel with an 190lph or bigger fuel pump with FMU or injectors(bigger injectors are way better).Research the cost cause it adds up fast. Also, will your engine handle 12lbs. of booost? If it's legit, and you can get your ride blown for around $1500-$1600, it'll be worth the cash. You'd be surprised how much power a well tuned supercharger combo can make.

He has the brackets and stuff but said I would need the oil cooler. Also, I was thinking the 12#'s would be too much for my stock internal's (hyper pistons). Would it be too much boost even if I did a leak down test and compression test and everything passed okay? I know I would need a fuel pump and FMU, I don't really care about the total cost yet, I just want to know if the supercharger is too much to handle for my car.

Maybe I can get a bigger pulley for less boost? Is there such a pulley for the VR4?

I'm not sure about the pulley. I'd call Paxton and order an assembly manual for the blower setup. I bought a used blower before and it was missing a few of the pieces to complete the setup. The few pieces cost $700 . Just make sure you know everything before purchasing. You could also buy a brand new vortech A-trim for about $1700-1800. If you do get the blower you're going to need forged pistons.

Although, I agree forged pistons would be best. The hyper pisons don't expand as much as a forged piston and can handle a blower if properly tuned. My friends runs a 308 with a XX-Trim Vortech 23psi, and the motor has TFS-R heads and intake (750hp+) with Keith Black hyper pistons and loves them and will put them in his next motor also. That blower will be fine but it would be nice if you could get some pullies to lower the boost, since the stock motor is so restrictive you will see more boost. Try ASP and Marhc thet also sell blower pullies.

I will be talking to the guy that rebuilds them on thursday. So, yes should I get it or no? And if I do end up rebuilding the engine, which pistons should I get and would I need rods too? THX

The bottom line is how much money are you willing to spend? Anytime you buy used, the product is uncertain and you get no warranty. By your post, I see you're going to need to buy a fuel pump $100, adjustable fuel pressure regulator $70, #30 injectors $240, paxton oil cooler $265, paxta trac fluid $25, ignition boost retard MSD $186 and $1000 for the blower if everything costs only $400 for the rebuild. The blower for $1000 total is a great deal if it's in good working condition. You're going to need to buy the stuff anyways if you get any high output blower, it's just some of the new blower packages come with everything. The vortech A-trim would be an excellent candidate for your car and costs about $1800 new. If it's just for street the 9# Powerdyne is a good kit and costs about $2000 new and it comes with a fuel pump and computer chip. It doesn't live up to constant drag racing though, where as the vortech and your friends paxton will. If your a weekend warrior and want a 10- 11 second mustang, ultimately that Vr-4 is a good choice. If you want a fast street car I'd get a milder blower. As for pistons, I'd get a good lightweight forged street piston from any of the big manufacturers Probe, Venolia , DSS etc. TRWs are inexpensive but those suckers are heavy. Well prepped stock rods should be good to 500 h.p.
