5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
My one buddy wants to race my 5.0
He's got two cars, one's a 1996 trans-am LT1 (auto) and the other one is a 1998 camaro LS1 (auto) Do think i have a chance of beating the trans-am or the camaro? Both the trans-am and camaro are stock My car is a 1992 LX 5.0 with....... 1 5/8" longtube headers o/r h-pipe flowmaster cat-back bbk cai bbk underdrive pullies 3.73 gears pro 5.0 shifter (and yes i do flat-shift hard!) I never rode in any of his 2 cars so i don't know how fast they are. I just want somebody to give me some advice on if i should race him, or not even bother w/ him. Also i have a 125 nitrous shot just in case Please help! Thanx |

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
who cares, just go for it. If you win, you win, if you lose, you lose. The lt1 will be slower than the ls1, of course.

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
I would think you should have the Lt1 with little to no trouble. If ur a good driver and can launch good, u may have the ls1. If you dont get him outta the hole though, you may have ur hands full without the nitrous. Race him and let me know if I am wrong or not.

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
I just got back, he came out a day early
we weren't suppost to race till tommorow night, anyway we lined up bout a 3 miles from my house. He drove the camaro, and one's of his buddie's drove the trans-am.I had my 125 shot in just in case. This time it was agaist the trans-am, we lined up got ready and his buddie waved us and we went. Had a horrible launch from dumping the clutch. We did the race over and this time I had a perfect launch, ripped second a little early but still had about 2 1/2 cars on him, hit 3rd-4th and had about 5 cars on him. Man! them LT1's must really suck on top end. Next was the camaro (i was a little nervous about loosing). Anyway we lined up and went. I pulled about a car off him on the launch, shifted 2nd perfect, hit third, and he was gaining a little, hit 4 a wound it out to about 115 mph and ended up only loosing by about 1 car. He asked if i using nitrous! i said no, but if you want to run me with nitrous you can. So we lined up once more and went. I pulled about 2 cars on him out of the hole, and by 3rd gear i was gone and he wasn't gaining, i ended up having him by about 7 cars HAHA! That's really something to be proud about when you only lose by a 1 car that has about 70 more horsepower than you. |

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
f bodys are over rated. they weight too much and the supposed "horsepower" seems to be more like little ponies than big horses. and the mighty "third gear" that the six speeds have is also over hyped.

Good job dude.. I have always been told you can get more power out of a Ford than you can a Chevy.. I have had Camaro's and Trans-Am's until I bought my first 5.0 90 GT Mustang then I was hooked. You just cant beat the Mustang's mid-rang charge.. Now I have a modded 91 LX convertible..

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
I know,I just recently got a set of BFgoodrich g-force radials.
I took off the a/c, got a powersteering delete, smog pump delete, manual rack/pinion, subframe connecters and 150ph jet for my nitrous. We met on the road yesterday and he wanted to race me in his camaro, i guess he wanted to show he's buddy how fast his car is. So we stopped and talked for a little and then we went on the street. We lined up at this private road i know of to race. His buddy got out and flagged up. I once again pulled him out of the hole about 2 cars, hit every gear perfect and won by about 3 cars. He asked me what i did to it since we raced last. I said why don't we race from a 40 roll, and that his car might do better. We got out on the freeway and i flipped up the nitrous switch and got up to 40. We flicked our lights, and he 3 beeped and we went. I would call that TORTISE VS. HARE. You got to see his buddies face I'll have to figure out a way to get the video of it posted on hear |

Sounds like some fun runs just watch those LS1 cars they can make some pretty serious power pretty easily.

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
at last years car craft summer nationals there was an LS1 camaro that made over 1000hp, and i guess the guy drives it on the street regularly. Thats pretty crazy.

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
Good kills. My last car was a 98 bolt on Formula. Before that I owned a 89 GT convertible(bolt ons). There is no way my Poor GT would have had a chance at any speed agianst my Formy. Both were auto.

Re: 5.0 (5spd) vs. trans-am (auto)
I know those ss's are pretty fast too, I saw one last night at the track, It sounded cammed, running 12.1's on dr's, trap around 113! not bad.
I did however run an ss one sort of, on the highway recently, the guy was behind me on an entrance ramp just riding my arse trying to get around me, I floor it in 2nd and 3rd, get a little sideway, by the top of 4th I had pulled a car or two on em, but of course with my gearing i had to let him fly by at those top highway speeds Im all about that 1320 for now.
