![]() My car had a tapping rocker and I pulled the valve cover and tightened them down so they werent moving. My engine is a 68 289 2v. My shop manual says that I should set each cylnder that I am adjusting to TDC but I didnt do that. I think the rockers are positive stop non adjusting on the 289 2v. Was just tightening the studs until they dont move all I had to do?

![]() I looked at your entry in Users Rides which
lists your engine as a stock 289 2v. It should have hydraulic lifters. Turn engine by hand until the piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Adjust rocker untill all play is removed from the push rod (twisting the pushrod helps). Then turn adjusting nut 1 and 1/2 more turns. Repeat for all cylinders. Hope you havn't damaged anything. Good Luck, Lou |

![]() Unless you are at TDC on the compression stroke, there can be compression in the valve springs that inhibits testing if the push rods are tight when you tighten the retainer nuts. So there is a chance that without having the piston at TDC, your rockers are too loose. I do not think this would cause permanent damage if you haven't driven much. Pull the valve cover and use the TDC procedure.
