Best race EVER!! Im still shaking.. :-D
Ok, excuse me if I suck at typing right now, but I'm still so pumped on adrenaline after this race I can barely type.
Heres the run down on everything... A friend of a friend has a 79 El camino. He just spent 8k putting the engine/rear/tranny together. Its a 388 Stroker with 12.5:1 compression, Some kind of aftermarket IRON head with 2.02" intake valve. Soild roller cam, Victor Junior intake and 750 carb. It runs on race gas, and goes out through full length headers to 2.5" exhaust. The rear end is a full posi with 4.11's and a turbo 350 transmission with shift kit and 2800stall. It has skinny's up front with 245 radials out back on weld rims. So the car just got 600miles on it today so he calls me up and wants to race tonight. I say ok. They come over and when I hear this thing pull up, I think OH **** ! This thing was the nastiest sounding car ever! The idle was just lopeing and snapping and crackling in between lopes. This was exhaust to wake up the whole neighborhood. I thought my car was loud! My friend thats the only other ford guy in town is tottaly going for me, but hes begging me to put on the ET streets cuz this car is so fast, but I didn't. Anyways, we go out to the only street to race. Some guys go to the end in a truck to mark the finish. We line em up and both deciede to go from a 5mph roll since traction isnt even possible till 3rd for both of us. We give the nod at 5mph and he jumps it a hair before me. I slam the pedal in first and just spin to 6000rpm almost instantly. I hit second hard and start fishtailing and I fall a little more than 3/4 of a car behind him. I let off and punch it again to gain traction and I'm a full length behind. I powershift 3rd harder than I have ever before and I start pulling on him. I pull up to his door and I powershift 4th and pull dead even with him. We hold dead even all the way through 4th gear. I could look right over at him like we were siting still. It was DEAD EVEN, neither one of us inching either way. We pass the truck and hit the brakes. I look back and my ford buddy is jumping in the road hes so happy! We went and hid for a half hour to let the cops clear and we talked. The guy was kinda irritated that my car kept up with him with my lowly 302 and 9:1 compression!! I couldn't believe it either! I was so estactic! 12.5:1 compression 388 stroker with a solid roller cam! I mean he shifts this sob at 7100rpm! Our friends at the end pull up and they couldn't tell who won either. They said it was so close nothing could tell. We were dead even. If I would have had traction I could have burned him out of the hole and won the race. My car is running soo good now like I said after I tuned it all up. This was the best race I've ever had! The guy w/ the 388 and I are going to go in on some dyno tuning next month and do it together so it all ends well! Skyler P.S. Our other buddies went home on the main road and they said they saw 7 cop cars flying through town out to where we raced! This is of 10 cop cars total in our town! ------------------ -1989 Saleen Mustang #406- TFS Heads, E-303 Cam, Edelbrock Intake, and a whole lot more. 13.2@106mph -Shooting for 12's and a 351 slowly in the works! That's awesome! You must be in the twelves now. That must suck for that guy though, cause even though your car is definitely fast, if I were to race my new combo the first time, and not win, Id be pissed. Score another one for Ford. Keep up the good work, and keep us posted on your new times.

talk about out of tune vs. perfect tuning. how heavy is that thing? i also think the 2.02 valves are small for a well breathing roller motor. maybe he has weak heads? 7100rpms and 388cubes though..

Great race Sky!
Not to take anything away from that great race, but has this guy tuned the car at all? Or, does it just weigh like 5000 lbs? Maybe he's got the wrong combination of parts? Not that any of that matters though - cause your 302 stayed right with his bad 388 stroker w/12.5:1 comp. Way to go!!! ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe -37,800 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' Pro-Charger D-1SC on the way!!! |

Sweet! It must feel good. I bet you couldnt sleep for a while! After a good race I never can. I lie there for a while pondering my combo and what Im going to buy next. You seem done with yours though, Are you still going to swap in that 351? With the way your car seems to be running now you may not want to. Good job with the race and let me know how the dyno runs turn out.

I have no idea what a 79 Elcamino weights, but its a pretty nice lookin car.
His combo must not be sorted out right though really. It sounds mean as hell though, like a full out dragster. He's swapping on a Deamon 750 carb next week and loosing the edelbrock. The sad thing is this thing is a trailer car for the track and can't even run street gas! My car could be a daily driver and I ran 87 octane during the race!! I wish I had a better launch so I could have won, but thats the way it goes. This race was almost identical to a race I had when I got my car up and running a year ago against a heavily modded 97 camaro z28. Same exact results except I won by a fender. The first gear spin, fishtail 2nd, let off, nail it, powershift 3rd, gain even, powershift 4th and I held a fender ahead the rest of the way. That camaro had 11.5:1 compression too Skyler ------------------ -1989 Saleen Mustang #406- TFS Heads, E-303 Cam, Edelbrock Intake, and a whole lot more. 13.2@106mph -Shooting for 12's and a 351 slowly in the works! Good race, Sky! The Camino weighs about 3500-3700lbs. and has no weight over it's tires. Tell you friend to buy a 5.0!

Sky, I just watched your video and now I know what you mean by spinning in first and fishtailing second. You have a very nice fox but one of the worst traction problems I have ever seen. Your car is definitely worth a 12. Get some controll arms and drag radials and whoop that camino.

i know what you mean fastang. my friends saw those videos and couldn't believe that was only a 106mph car leaving dual posi marks like that, hanging it out 3 feet and still smoking well into second. afoaf (went to middleschool with this kid) has a pretty well built 97 t/a (he bought it built from af-heads, cam, longtubes, no cats, blown rear within the first week of owning it now 12bolt/4.10) and he does not fishtail/spin/smoke like that at all on a very hard 1-2 w/ 285(? i think) futuras.. that thing has to run atleast one hundred and mid teens, tons more tq at any point in the rpm band and more gear to boot. it has to be sky's racecraft suspension.

I have a bunch more videos of my car, but here is one before any fuel system mods, no FPR, no 24lb injectors or fuel pump only 10* timing, and NO off road H pipe. Car was way down on power compared to now.

Well I have a pair of 11.5x26 ET Streets .
I have to get some new lower control arms or new springs before they are going to fit though. The car sits too low as it is. I had spring spacers in before, but they hurt weight transfer and made the ride unbareably stiff.
