Next mod? (98gt5sp)
Hello,
(Posting this for a friend whose internet isn't ...umm...functional..) He has a 98 GT 5sp with the following mods: 3.73 gears MAC Cold Air Intake Flowmaster Catback BBK H-pipe He wants to maybe get a shifter and some little things, but he wants to know what he should save for. I was thinking heads, but I heard they were a lot more expensive for the 4.6s. He wants to get whatever will yield the most gain for the least amount of cash. (Duh ) Does anyone have any suggestions? He was also thinking about a stage 3 chip. He doesn't know if he wants to get a bunch of small stuff, or save up now for something big? Any ideas? Thanks, DoranW

Screw the chip. Tell him to get some PI heads. It'll cost $1500 but it's well worth it.

Shifter and drag radials. Don't bother with the chip. It's a waste of money. Rear upper and lower control arms would help, too. As well as subframe connectors (help to stiffen up the chassis). Quickest hp for the buck is always nitrous. Personally, if he want's to stay N/A then the PI route is the way to go. Otherwise save up for a blower. Especially a roots blower like the Saleen or Kenne Bell. Or go centrifugal with a ATI Procharger or Vortech. After he gets a blower on there, then put it on the dyno and get a chip BURNED specifically for his car/application. That's when the chip will work the best.

That's what I thought as far as with the chip. I didn';t know the heads were that cheap...I had heard that they were much more. He actually does have the control arms on order I believe...
I personally don't like the roots-type blower, but that isn't my choice . Thanks, DoranW

awww man
get the gears. does he not want to mess up the warranty on the motor or somm. i mean, 373s are fun, but 410s are much...much... more bang for your buck. N20 is fun, but a supercharger can run all night long.

A stock 96-96 4.6 2v doesn't really have the power band to utilize 4:10's. I think he made the right decision with the 3:73's.
Tell him to get a shifter no matter what he has planned for the car. The Steeda Tri-Axe and Pro 5.0 are the two best out there IMO. Just so you know, that $1500 isn't only for the PI heads, thats for a full Ported and Polished head swap kit that includes everything needed to do the swap (new intake, dipstick, gaskets, etc.) The swap will put his car deep into the 13's. The only problem with the swap is that he will be running 10.5:1 compression, which although is perfect for a N/A setup, is almost too high if he wants to add a power addder down the road.

What are some ways he could lower his compression, because some day (far away) he will probably want forced induciton? I don't think he can install heads, so how much should installation cost?
Thanks, DoranW

Installation won't be cheap at any kind of dealer/garage because its a 18-20+hr job by the books. Hopefully he has some "hook-ups" or "connections" so he can get a decent price. I would even see if I could become friends with a local Ford tech and see if he would do it on the side for a sweet price.
If he gets the head swap and doesn't want forced induction for a few years down the road, thats perfect. Because he then can have a short block built with all forged parts and he can have whatever CR he wants (meaning new pistons are the best bet for lowering the CR.) Then he'll have an engine capable of over 500hp safely. |

He should be able to have the heads cc'd for not too much. The factory tolerances on the PI head is terrible. +/- 1.5cc. On a head with a 43.75cc combustion chamber, that's a huge difference in compression. Have them all cc'd to 46cc or so. That way they will all be the same, and his CR will drop a lot.
