Default Ford 302 starter motor - Aarrgghhh.!!!!

Hi - I have a Ford 302 motor (1971 vintage) and a C4 auto box. The starter motor is awful. It has a high pitched engagement ring to it - it then continues to whizz away if the engine doesn't fire. It's so bad I wait until there's no-one around before starting!

Can you suggest a good replacement starter that is like a pre-engaged type so it doesn't make that infernal noise and frighten the children and horses??

The motor is in a Ford Capri Mk1 (Europe style) Perana from South Africa - but I'm in the UK.

thanks Chris

It sounds like the ring gear on the flywheel might be a little worn. You might want to pull the starter and inspect the teeth on the starter, and the ring gear.

Most of the time it's a bad bendix. It doesn't engage completely, and that chews up the teeth on the bendix and on the starter ring ... I'd get a new starter and put it in. If it engages properly without making racket, you'll probably be able to get by without changing the starter ring, which is a much bigger hassle!

might want to check and make sure the little bell housing cover is put back on the car. Mine is off right now, making my starter seem louder to me.
