![]() Hello,
I have a '99 Explorer AWD 5.0 limited, actually my wife's transport. With the ridiculous gas prices I was wanting to improve the MPG on her truck. Currently it gets about 16-18 mpg. My question is, is it possible to disconnect the front drive shaft to eliminate some of the powertrain drag. With it being AWD do think the transfer case would be okay? ![]()

![]() If you disconnect front driveshaft you will damage the transmission and the transfer case among other things. Do a tuneup, air filter, BG fuel injection servce(3 step), right tire pressure, alignment, stuff like that. If you disconnect the driveshaft you could spend $3000 or more to fix problem.
