Pulley install
I need a new serpentine belt so I figured, why not just get the pulleys too. Is the install hard? What all do I have to remove? The Radiator?
I apologize for my lack of knowledge but I would like to learn how to do these things myself to save money and have the know-how. On a side note, happy birthday to me. The 7th will be number 20! Nope, don't need to take the radiator out. just have to remove the fan from the water pump pulley. They are very easy to install. The crankshaft will be the hardest, for that you'll need to yank the fan shroud, but you should be able to get it with the radiator in, if not, no biggie, the rad comes out in like 2 min. One side note, make sure your cooling system is working well, and you have a good alternator. Pullies have been associated with poor performance in both of those areas. Good Luck! |

Yea, I need a new pump and actually, a radiator wouldn't hurt because the fans on mine are all bent up. Last summer I had to ride around with the heat on so the car wouldn't overheat. I guess I can't take a hint...

Im getting some pullies myself, and was wondering if i would have to remove my electric fan (black magic)? or will i have more room without standard shroud and fan? and not have to.

I have some pulleys on the way as well, but I don't understand why you would have to remove the fan, it seems like there is enough room to work. Will I have to use an impact wrench to do the swap?

You don't have ot remove the fan if you have a electric one,put a clutch type thats stock on everything before 93 you have to remove the 4 bolts because they hold it on and the water pump pulley, which is inclueded in the underdrive pulley kit.

I took out my radiator when I did mine, and it was the easiest install I've ever done. I skipped the alt. though.
EASIEST THING I've ever done except the MAF change. SHIFTER IS A ***** . ITS STILL NOT IN, I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!1 Sky ------------------ -1989 Saleen Mustang #406- TFS Heads, Edelbrock intake, E-303, 3.73's, 1 5/8 shorty headers, Offroad-Hpipe, 2chamber flows, 36psi FPR, playing with timing still, 70mm tb, 73mm maf, 24lb injectors, K/N, March Crank pulley, MSD6a, 9mm wires and FMS Aluminum driveshaft. What do you guys think of the crank pulley offered by Summit for ~$51.00? Claims about 10 hp and an install time of 30 min.

I don't think that you would get 10 HP on an engine close to stock. The horsepower figures are always inflated.
I have to agree with Skyman - It is alot easier removing the rad. It takes like 2 minutes. You may have to use a hammer on the crank pulley to get it off. I did and beat the living Hell out of the pulley. ------------------ C ME FLY 88 coupe 14.75 @ 98 mph Traction Limited |

Can't i just replace the stock water pump pulley with the underdrive pulley and put the bolts back in? my car is a 90, "93cobra, what do you mean?

Stang Crazy,
If you buy a three pulley set, you'll also need an impact wrench to the change the alternator pulley. Sometimes I've done it without the air tool, but most of the time the alternator nut is stuck on there like it should be. On your 91, you will need to unbolt the fan but you don't have to remove it from the car. Instead, carefully rest the fan inside the fan shroud so you can get access to the water pump pulley and crank pulley. There's no compelling need to remove the radiator to install the pulleys. If you want to change the radiator at the same time, well that's a different story. I also recommend using loctite blue (#242 i think) on all the pulley bolts. Its a straightforward job that takes about an hour. Btw, I also suggest buying an allen socket that will fit the new allen bolts for the crank. It will allow you to put some good torque on the crank bolts without having to use a clumsy allen wrench.
