they also changed the design of the chip at the pentium 4...its smaller and faster, easier to develop further upon...so its all about technological enhancements....

titan is right...who needs a 30ghz computer?....YET....imagine telling someone back in 89 when the 486 came out that you would use a 30gb harddrive....lol..."whats a GIGAbyte?"...wait 10 years then see if we have 30ghz processors...right now, theres nothing for personal use to need that....

I spent bucks overhauling this machine with all the bells and wistles. Waiting for less expensive DVD burner. I think there is not a real popular standard yet.

By far the best item is my Logitech Daul Optical "Wheel" mouse. I freak when I get on a system that does not have a wheel mouse. Maybe should pass some kind of law about that.

Something so simple but can drive me Kookoo!

JJ-Jonathon Think about the applications that you would need to utilize, to make a 30ghz CPU necessary, thats the type of stuff we need to think about.

Things that need instant reactions, or even anticipations of our actions... ohh scary isn it?

Well, have you guys read about "The Cell" chip that Intel, IBM, and Sony are working on? It's due for production in 2004-5, and it is reported to be operating in the single-digit TERAHERTZ range (like 1.8THz) or so!!! I guess from what I read, they don't feel like waiting for Moore's Law (you know, processor speed doubling every 18 months), and the demand for faster processors in video game systems is very high. They're saying that video games in the near future will look like and be as smooth as the movie "Toy Story". The "cell" itself is supposedly about 16 chips integrated to operate as one somehow... Don't quote me on any of this, I just read it from somewhere, and I'm not someone to believe all that I read.

Okay, the "Budget" system I assembled a month ago for "schoolwork"
1. PC Chips mainboard, Click here to see the specs. Has an AMD Duron mounted to it from the factory
2. AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor
3. DVD/CD-ROM...think it's a 48x, but it's fast whatever it is!
4. Micro-ATX case w/ 350W power supply
5. NVidia GeForce2 AGP video card (even though there's one built into the 'board).
6. Lucent 56k modem (oooooooh.......)
7. Floppy drive
8. Iomega ZIP 650 12x4x32 CD-RW/CD-R drive (cannibalized from my main living room machine)
9. There's a totaly of 3 fans in the machine: one on processor, one sucking, one blowing.
10. First HDD: Seagate 40GB 7200 RPM
11. Second HDD: Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM
12. 256 MB of DDR
13. Then there's the $5 mouse, the $50 MS Office keyboard (this thing is a fReAk!), and the $125 17" flatscreen monitor.
14. Oh, and the network cable and switch to network this thing to my main living room computer.

I plan on adding more memory eventually (it'll handle up to 2GB worth of SDRAM or DDR), but for spending less than $500 on the system, I think I did pretty well. I just can't believe how stable it is! I'm running WinXP Pro, Office XP Pro w/ FrontPage, and MS Visual Studio w/ .NET framework. On my old Win98se system, the C++ compiler seemed to crash it about every other time I'd compile a program. Can't believe how nice the .VOB~.AVI conversions are. Very stable!!! I used to belong to the Intel camp, as well. The support from AMD is outstanding comparatively!

Oh, and you Apple guys aren't allowed to post here..... J/K!!!!

capri, have you seen some screen shots of doom3 (coming out beginning of next year)? That's pretty damn close to toy story graphics already.
There's lots of places where we need more processing power. Graphics companies could use them to create better special effects quicker and cheaply. I like to do some video editing/encoding and rendering graphics as well, it'd be great to be able to do that in real time, or even faster than real time.
Games is where i'm most forward looking to it though, better physics engines that actually mimic real physics, having surroundings that are realistically affected by what you do, and better AI. I can't wait.
Here is a good article about where the future of computing is going. This guy knows what he's talking about.

Wow, that's a great article, man. Kinda like a "nice" version of Orwell's "1984", I guess. It's coming, and the stuff's only gonna get cooler as time progresses. I'll take on of those $100 pc's for now, though.

Haven't seen the previews for Doom yet, though. Shoot me a link if there is one!

Doom III
Screenshots
This Movie talks about all the doom series, but seeing some of the scenes being rendered in real time for doom 3 are worth the long download.

I thought doom 3 was out already, too...I know nvidia (sp) designed the Ge-Force 4 specifically for that game. As for a gaming comp, see if you guys can find anything on a computer called the "Alien." I saw the add about 3 months ago, I think it was a 2.6 ghz p4 hybrid. I know it was made ONLY for games. Had 2 gigs of RAMBUS rd-ram...was so much tho, don't even remember the price...but it had a cool green tower

"DOOM III is basically a 'retelling' of the original DOOM .... Most of the game is set on Mars, where you're a marine recently stationed at the Union Aerospace Corporation" excerpt from this article. No it isn't out yet, and the development team has been using ati's radeon 9700 pro to demo the game stating that it is currently the best performer for the game.
titan, it was probably an alienware computer, they're a good brand and is one of the next best things you can get to building one yourself. Looked and saw they have a P4 2.8 with 1gig of ram for $4200, get 2 gigs brings the price up to $5000. Personally I'd go with the gig of pc-1066 rdram(not offered in 2gb) which brings it to $4500. Actually if I were to get something like that, i'd buy all the parts myself and put it together which would probably drop the price at least $500.

As much as I love my computer...I think I would enjoy a fully modded engine w/ a s/c instead.

2 video cards (Radeon + All in wonder..a tv card)
Sound Blaster Platinum (4.1 surround setup)

Work Computer:
Dual 2.2 GHz Xeon Chip
1024 megs of RAM
80 Gigs of HD space
Dual Video (geforce3 / radeon)
2 19" Monitors
24x Burner
DVD Drive

Work Server #1:
8 Processor 750mhz Xeon Chips
1024 Megs of RAM

Does this mean my first computer, a 16 K Texas Instruments, is obsolete already? And after I upgraded to 48 K with a double sided double density 5 1/4" floppy disk drive?

I actually am a programmer at a certain Redmond based software company (but still going to school . I need the fast machine because of developing, and I have the fast servers because they hold databases and stuff that I maintain.

I work in the group the controls the company's email. It's fun, and also funds my Mustang addictions.

Thanks,
DoranW
