'01 Cobra dyno results
Have you seen the new issue of 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords? They tested a new Cobra and here are the numbers.
99 Cobra Fixed 262.6 HP 269.9 ft-lbs 01 Cobra 277.5 HP 285.5 ft-lbs On this car's second track run ever it turned a 13.52 @ 103.38 mph. This was with a 2.146 60 ft time. The car on this run had the spare tire and jack removed, the entire airbox assembly removed and an iced intake, although the article goes on to say they did't ice the car into frostbite. So, I am not sure if they iced it at all or just didn't cool it down as much as they usually do. Anyway, I figured you guys would be interested in this. Oh, the car only had 153 miles on it at the time of testing. |

Nice, that's getting between 335-340 flywheel.
I've seen new Cobra's with the fix posting those kinds of dyno numbers too though. The car may make a few more once it's totally broken in too. |

Track testing a car with 153 miles on it... Crazy! If they waited until 1500 miles it probably would've trapped a mph or two higher, still 3mph better than the best 99's I've heard from, maybe they'll get the gear ratios closer to where they should be one of these years.

Looks like Ford is moving in the right direction with 2001 Cobra's. Those numbers aren't too shabby, especially given the IRS setup. Makes me want to buy one...hmmmm...wonder what the wife would say about that one.

SaleenGTS They didn't make the Cobr ain '00. Due to the problems the '99 was having. I want a '03 Cobr awith the 5.4 and a Vortech T-trim, oh and a solid rear axle with 3.73's. Now that would turn my crank!!!

PG: Contrary to popular belief, the 99 and the 01 Cobras are not anything near identical. According to SVT, the 99 had 18 spline half-shafts and the 01 has 24 spline half-shafts, supposedly of a larger diameter. I should be able to give some decent times within the next couple of weeks. My 01 is getting a gear change to a 3:73 as we type. The car tested by Car and Driver was an 01 not an 02. I have run the car with DOT road race tires, to scuff the tires in, times were not too shabby for a stock car with only a Superchip and an AFE filter.

Cajun- Out of curiosity, why did you choose a 3.73 gear? Are you going with a power adder in the future? Alot of the modular guys on the Corral are now getting away from 4.10s & 4.30s (let alone 3.73s) and saying that a 4.56 should be the minimum for a naturally aspirated 4v Cobra.

I have been hearing the same thing on the gears. I just can't imagine having a set of 4.56's!!! That seems like too much gear for me, but I guess it does the job at the track. I wonder how "streetable" 4.56's would be? Anyone know?
The cool thing about the Cobra's is that there seems to be a lot of potential in these engines, especially with a blower, sticky tires and some decent gears. E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe - 38,000 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' |

TJR: I talked a great length with Ford SVT Techs. My Cobra must remain streetable, dependable, fairly fuel efficient, and remain fun to drive. In talking with the SVT reps, they tell me that the best comprimise is the 3:73 gears. As per their statements, quarter mile times should drop by .5 seconds, 0-60 mph times should drop by .2-.3 seconds, top-end speed should rise by 10 mph due to the lower gearing allowing the use of 5th gear as the fastest gear instead of fourth. Highway mileage should drop by 1 mpg. I currently get 25 mpg at 80 mph on cruise, 18 mpg in town driving. I race SCCA road courses and require the punch and top end speed I can gain with a 3:73.
We discussed the 3:55's, 3:73's, 4:10's and all others. They claimed that the best gearing I could use was the 3:73. Thanks DT |
