Post When do you need a roll bar???

How fast does a convertable have to be before they require you to have a roll bar? Is it anytime faster than 14.00?

I think that is correct. I am not sure as I dont keep up with much vert stuff but that sounds right. Someone else will have to chime in just to be sure.

Yep, Faster than 14 you need a roll bar. I run 12's and still don't have one.

Are the people that operate the tracks usually pretty strict on this rule?

I don't know if my can even get into the 13's yet but will baby it the first time out and see what time I get. That way in the even I can get into the 13's and they don't let me have anymore runs because of no rollbar, I will have had at least a couple runs under my belt.

Yes it is 13.99 for a vert. The local tracks here will let you slide if you go in the 13.90's range most of the time but if you get any quicker they will flag you.

It is 11.99 for a Hardtop

ALSO for hardtops along with the rollcage some make you have the full body fire suit after 11.9's. What about a NHRA license? Isn't it 9's?

I don't know if it is different here but in a vert you only have to have the bar that goes across the roof if you are only 13.99 or faster and 6 point if you are 11.99 or faster and you only have to have a fire jacket not a full body fire suit with an 11.99 or faster time. The rules change again at 9.99 or faster.

You also have to have a scatter shield if manual and a 5-point harness among other things.

with those mods im sure you'll hit 13s easy, thats if the AODE doesnt blow up first

i can't believe you have all that money in those mods and DONT have a converter yet, it seems like you got some cash so get PI stallion and i'd bet you could hit 12's on drag radials or slicks

Believe me, I desperately want to get a PI Stallion but have a wife (I mean watch dog) that is monitoring my every move with my car. Everytime I buy parts, I need to hide them in the garage for about a month before I put them on. Her excuse is, we need a dining room set, the kids need new bedroom sets!!! We don't need that stuff, we got tv trays to eat on and the kids can sleep in their sleeping bags for at least a few more years...jk

I'll probably get a converter in a few months.

The safety stuff will cost you a lot but is needed..The Blowproof Bell will save your feet if the clutch or flywheel ever deciede to let go, the drive shaft loop will keep it from flipping etc..I did all of these when I started going to the track more as I just wanted to be safe and I strongly suggest atleast the bell housing and drive shaft loop.

I currently have the SFI approved bell, clutch (flywheel this winter, need for NMRA tech), loop, studs, roll bar, jacket, helmet, battery stuff, harness, etc...and others I can't think of.

The bar will make a big difference in the feel of the car it will be much more solid but if I had a vert I would go Chrome-Moly to save all the weight I could.

Well tomorrow I'm gonna go and see if I can get into the 13's. Any last minute advice anyone such as:

lower tire pressure in rear tires.
Lauch with rpms at I don't know, I guess 1600.
have a quarter tank of gas or less.
etc

Well, I didn't have to worry about a roll bar. All I could manage was:

2.33 60ft
14.90 1/4
94.35 mph

I definately need a torque converter and drag radials. I also need to get my launch technique down.

I also noticed my car was making a funny sound. When I got home I saw that my EGR tube was completely disconnected and the sound was the exhaust leaking out. Does anyone think this could have slowed me down any?

Yes that leak did slow you down and with traction that is a 13 sec car, the 2.33 60ft is killing you.

I found on street radials is is best just to drive off the line, I was able to get a best of 13.20 @ 104 1.80 60ft on the stock motor, added D.O.Ts went 12.87 @ 104 1.60 60ft.

Moponys, you setup is similar to mine; TW heads and the same cam from Lunati. Try more timing, fuel pressure and drag radials or slicks.

As far as the rollbar goes, you need a 6 point when ET is 13.99 or less.

Thanks for the encouraging replies. Next time, I'll try not to jump on the gas as much as I was so that I won't spin so much.

My timing was set to 14* and it pings if set any higher. Fuel pressure was at 49 and I don't know if I should go any higher than that.

I'm gonna start looking for some drag radials but don't know if they have them for 18" wheels. If I can find any, then I'll have to buy some used 16s or 17s for a set of rear DRs.
