Battery dummy light

Quick question...when I turn the key to On but don't start the car, my battery dummy light comes on and stays lit. Is this simply because the alternator isn't charging it, or is this the car telling my battery is low on juice?

the light comes on for a few reasons. it comes on to tell you that your battry is not charging and under a certain voltage. also to let you know the bulb is good. now if the light is on when the car is running then you have a battery or alternator problem.

if the car cranks fine and the light goes away after it starts then you dont have a problem.

Light stays on when the key is in the on position...when I start it it goes away. Ok..thanks. I was just wondering whether the light staying on with the key turned was the car's way of telling me my battery is weak.
