Default electric water pump electrical and electric fan wiring

just wonder if any knows how to properly setup the electrical for an electric water pump. ground is easy, but where should i connect the hot wire? the hot wire is currently connect to the switch that is next to the ignition, but this may be affecting my starter. is there any other location where i can get power only when the car is running. otherwise i'm going to just setup a switch to turn on and off manually. i had to go the manual switch route with my taurus 3.8 fan as well since it pulls so many amps at startup. the fan really affected my starter since it was also connected to the switch by the ignition for a short time. i anyone has a resolution for the fan that would be very helpful as well since i don't really like having to remember to turn it on all of the time. any ideas?

Put a fuse on both lines and you can just run them both to the starter sylinoid. Works fine for me, 1.5 years and going...

I think you should clarify that. You can't run them to the battery side of the starter relay without another relay or they will run all the time. If you use another relay, the coil wire has to come from an ignition switch hot source when "on".

i now have both the electric fan and electric water pump connected to a switch below my steering wheel and then to the starter relay. basically the fan and pump only come on when i switch them on. is this ok for a temporary solution? would this drain the battery in any way? i'm planning on leaving the electrical this way until i can afford a good relay as suggested above.

If you have a problem, it will be with the switches getting too hot and melting - keep track of their temp by touching them during ectended run times.

the fan switch does get hot. i noticed this before with the old one that burned up. i used bigger connector ends to connect the wire to the switch this time so maybe that will help. i am wondering if it would be ok to leave the thermostat off and run the low setting fan instead of the high setting that it is now on. the low fan setting draws much less and seems more efficient, but i'm not sure if doing this will cause a secondary issue. freeway speeds or racing may be a problem, but with racing i can switch to the high setting temporarely.

Scratch that, I was reading too many posts that day, you are correct, you will need to find an ignition source that come on with the key or order a thermostat switch for the fan.
