oil coming out of dipstick tube
i have a 69 mustang 302-4v with 140000 miles on the original motor. Just the other day i noticed that oil was coming up through the dipstick and spraying on the underneath of my hood and on the engine. i was told that it was blow by and the only way to fix it was to rebuild it. I just wanted a couple more opinions before I decide what i am going to do. If i have to rebuild it I want to put a cam it in. What kind of specs on the cam would be good for a daily driver car? what else would be a cheap way of upgrading the motor while I am rebuilding it? thanks for the help

why does having blowby mean that you need to have a rebuild. i have never heard of this before.

Blowby means the rings are worn slap out. When the spark plug fires, fuel/air explodes, and the piston is being pushed down, (also refered to the power stroke in the cycle)gasses are seeping around the rings and into the crankcase. This means a loss of power and pressure in the crankcase that has to escape somewhere. In J's case, out the dipstick tube. Hey J, I'm building a 302 right now and I'm puting a Comp cam XE268H in it. The guy I take my machine work to said it was a good, streetable cam. A dual plane intake and better ignition would help performance too. Good luck!

Will that cam that you just mentioned have some noticable lope in it at idle, and will i have enough vacuum to run my power disc brakes? thats for the info cant wait till next week when i get it all back together.

You need a rebuild. I could say that it also could mean that your PCV valve isn't working or that the hose is stopped up, but with that many miles on it, you need a rebuild.
I've never ran one of the XE cams before (Extreme Energy), but I do think Comp Cams make an excellent choice for SB Fords, and yes the 268 probably has a nice little lope to it. If that bothers you, move down to the 260 cam it will idle a little bit better, plenty well enough for power brakes (I really doubt that the 268 would ever cause any brake problems though.) ---------------- 66 GT Fastback 5.0, 5-speed, cable clutch, JBA's, 3.40 gears, EFI coming soon? i want some lope at idle 66fastback. i just havent messed with enough cams to know if i would my power brakes or do something else bad on a stock motor to worry about. what kind of power do you think would i get out of a 302 with a 268 cam, stock heads, edelbrock intake and carb, and 9.5 to 1 pistons? do you think it would get me in the 14s? thanks

The last remaining input needed to answer this, is what kind of gears do you have? And what kind of exhaust, 14's are defintely possible.

i have a 8 inch rear end with 3.00 gears in it. On the exhuast end i have headers and 2 chamber flows.

Have to agree with Clark, as usual, gears really make the car feel good. I've got 3.40's and love them, and personally consider 3.55's the best gear you can buy. I've got the overdrive tranny and tall tires and still can't make myself buy 3.80 gears. If you can keep from spinning the tires too much, you should have a solid 14 second car.

j's69, I'd do a compressiopn check and possibly a leak down test before I'd do a rebuild. Low compression or bad leak down would confirm the bad rings or bad valves for sure. The PCV valve as mentioned earlier could also be the culprit. I have a CC 268 HE single pattern cam and it seems really good for the street with lots of low end torque and fairly good to 5500 rpm. Thats with a Performer intake and 600 Holly 4160. Put in a windage tray, crank scraper, CC roller tip rockers and maybe some pocket ported/gasket matched 351W heads. Add an electronic ignition and you'll be well on your way. Oh, yeah, headers and 2 1/2" exhaust with Flows. This'll put you low 14's or high 13's, I think. It sure did me. I may have a small wt. advantage though. Good luck with the rebuild but check the compression first before diving in. My $.02.

well i know that it isnt the pcv valve or the hose clodged up. If i am going to have to put rings and valves in it i might as well go ahead and do it all. I have the petronix electronic ignition, headers, and 3" 2 chamber flows. im thinking about putting a shot of gas on it too but i dont know how those hyperuetectic pistons will like that, but thats not anytime soon i think. If i can pull up next to a newer mustang at a red light and roast it ill be happy. im not going for low 12s with 5 mpg car. I want a street car that gets decent gas mileage with some get up and go when i need it. if i get 12-15 mpg i will be happy b/c i drive alot in it. thanks for the advice again.

j's69, if it matters any, I only get 13-13 1/2 mpg mixed city and highway. If I do any drag racing, it's much worse of course, but entirely worth it.

While you're at it, installing stainless steel valves are recommended. They will help minimize valve recession with unleaded gas. Plus they're really durable and not as likely to break and fall into your combustion chamber. Been there.
