Installing Headliner. easy?hard?
I was wondering if anyone has installed the headliner in there 66 or similar mustang. I bought the headliner and the old one is out.
i have the glue and the rails but i was wondering if there was anythign else i needed? also if you had a hard time with it and if there were any tips or tricks you could give me to make it a little easier.. thanks.

To do it right, you need to remove the front and rear windshield. The headliner wraps around the flange that the window seals mount to. When removing the existing headliner, make note of the holes that the rods go into. There are usually 2 holes that near where the rod goes. Install the screws for holding the visor shades, rear view mirror, etc. prior to placing the headliner. This way you can feel where these are located to cut small holes.
Prior to starting, warm the headliner so it is pliable. Make sure you have the rods in the right order. Read the instructions and follow the instructions for the glue. Start in the back-center, put the glue on and attach with a spring clip or a piece of windlace. Work to the front keeping the material tight. Do the C pillars last. Good luck.

If you do decide to do it yourself, I would take the seats out and cover the carpet and dsh with something. You don't want that weatherstrip adhesive to get on anything it's not supposed to be on.

do you absolutely have to remove the windows? the previous owner took the headliner out. thanks for any more tips.

I sure would like to meet that MOM The rear & front glass being removed will give you better results. My first attempt on mine was with the rear glass removed and the front in. I liked the finished product but then the forward glue started to release a little and then it loosened up
My words of wisdom is if you are going to leave the front glass in use GOOD glue, the stuff I used was this black adhesive that I got with the headliner. I won't make that mistake again, next time that good old yellow adhesive.

when my mom replaced mine the windows and interior were already out so it was a little easier..

It is possible to replace the headliner without removing the glass. I think that's how professional trim shops would do it. I tried it that way and couldn't do it right (wasted $25 for a new headliner). I ended up buying another headliner, removing the glass and installing it the way it was done originally at the factory. It is kind of a pain to remove and reinstall the glass, but that's how I ended up having to do it. I bet the pro's can do a good job without glass removal, but I could not.

She doesnt deliver! The upholstery shops in Phoenix that I talked to most of them said for a better job you need to remove the glass. Because if the adhesive were to give out at the edges the glass would still be holding it in place. |
