Attn 351W guys
I have a question on 351W Fox Mustangs. I'm having problems keeping the darn thing cool. What type of radiator, water pump, and fan are you guys running? This engine is a 1969 model windsor. Thanks

I've been running a 79 351W for awhile now. Even in the summer on vacation trips I still don't have cooling problems. I got a stock water pump, stock radiator, flex-a-lite fan and a 160 degree thermostat. I still have cast iron heads so thats why i haven't upgraded my cooling system yet. If you can't figure out why it's running hot, throw in a fluidyne aluminum radiator and an edelbrock victor water pump, I guarantee you'll never overheat again.

Some early windsor blocks do not have steam holes drilled above the cylinder bores. I found this out in the insallation notes for trick flow heads. Trick Flow says to drill these holes for twisted wedge heads. I don't know if that is your problem, but it migh be worth looking into.

I have a '69 351W also, I still have the stock radiator, just flushed and boiled out. Stock water pump, too. I do have a Flex-a-lite 17" flex fan. It adds a lot of looks and is better than the stock one. I also have a 160 degree thermostat. It runs fairly hot, but not anything excessive or remotely dangerous. Hope this can help a little.

I'm running a '69 351W in a 88 pony. I used to have overheating problems too. What I did was get a 3 core radiator and took the regular fan off and installed a 16" electric fan with a 180 degree thermostat. Another thing I did was moved my timing to 39 degrees total advance. With my MSD Ignition, even when it does get about 220 degrees it fires right up. But as for overheating, that's a thing of the past.

Hey 1988gtconv, what model motor did the water pump and the fan come off of? Did it come off the '69 you got the engine from? Or did if come off a FOX body Mustang?
Also are you running a v belt or a serpentine belt. Sounds like something's running backwards. For more info, answer the questions above and I'll get back to you. “…because, no one’s really gonna be free until nerd persecution ends.” ---Revenge of the Nerds ------------------------------- '79 Mustang Coup 4" Cowl Weld wheels (15x6;15x8) Stock 5.8L C4 w/ shift kit 1.5" MAC full length headers Holley 750 CFM Edelbrock intake 2.5" Off road H-pipe 8.8" Rear end w/ 2.73:1 gears (sucks!) Well, that sounds correct.
You never actually said what type of radiator and thermostat you have. New, old, stock 5.0? Anyway, I would check out some decent 3 core radiators (some of which others posted in this string) and go with a 180 degree thermostat. Note: if your radiator is broken, don't get it "fixed", get a new one. Also, make sure your timing is set correctly. Hope this helps even if only a little. “…because, no one’s really gonna be free until nerd persecution ends.” ---Revenge of the Nerds ------------------------------- '79 Mustang Coup 4" Cowl Weld wheels (15x6;15x8) Stock 5.8L C4 w/ shift kit 1.5" MAC full length headers Holley 750 CFM Edelbrock intake 2.5" Off road H-pipe 8.8" Rear end w/ 2.73:1 gears (sucks!) I have a '73 351W in my '82GT and I use the stock fan and a 4 core radiator with a 180 thermostat and on hot days the highest I have ever seen it go was 190 degrees.
