Question Budget Heads Question

I have a friend that owns a salvage yard and I can get the 351 windsor heads with the bigger valves for free. Would they be worth getting and having ported or should I just save my money and buy some aftermarket heads.

A few thoughts:

1) It would be costly to upgrade the components so that the valvetrain could rev to redline on a Mustang.

2) If the heads are early vintage, then they aren't compatible with unleaded fuel and will be susceptible to valve seat recession.

3) The valves aren't that much bigger than the valves on Mustang heads.

4) Porting costs would be $400+? New springs/retainers/keepers would be another 100 - 200?

I guess what I'm saying is that after you total all the costs you'd be close to the price of a new set of World Products heads.

By the time you put all the work into them...they are not worth it.
The heads are only worth about $100 anyway.
also you would need hardened valve seats.

Or check out the X iron or P alum Ford heads - as good power and better torque than most popular alum aftermarket ones up to 4000 or so, and good deal for street on a budget. www.oemfordparts.com, their svo section is one source where you can check them out and see prices.
