Default Triple the car tax...California Sucks!

If any of you live in California expect your State DMV Tax on your cars to triple...As early as May, a little later if there is a legal fight.

There was a legal opinion today that will trigger an administrative increase....Vote and approval is not required... I LOVE our system. I am a tad upset since, like many of you, I just purchased a new car...Got me..this will equal an approximate yearly registration of $1,200.

So good luck....

Where have you been hiding? $1200 a year for tax on a car that you already own? Tell me how this works. We dont have that in NY.

Default Where have you been hiding?

LOL....hey srv1... How have ya' been? As for the "Tax"...we in California get to pay a DMV registration Personal Property Tax YEARLY on our beloved vehicles. It is equal to a percentage of the FMV ( Fair Market Value) of the car..the FMV is determined when first purchased and then upon subsequent transfer of title.

It is an itemized deduction on Schedule A of our 1040 Federal Tax..if you do an itemized deduction in lieu of the standard exemption/deduction... LOL

Take Care... Jenn

Well, this horrible, evil system has been in effect for more than 60 years, and is the reason that California has the best overall highway system in the country, and why it's free to drive on. The term "FREEway" is a California term, because you never have to pay tolls. They coined the term first, and it has stayed that way ever since.

Also, just to set the record straight, the state has been entitled to 4 times more than they have asked for since the 1950's, according to the written law, yet a few years ago, the amount was slashed even further. They are simply reinstating a portion of a legal tax that they can impose. Did you write a letter of thanks last year when you saved so much on your registration?

Every state in the nation is going to be hit very hard this year with budget shortfalls, and they will do whatever they can to replace some of their lost revenue. In reinstating a portion of the vehicle tax, California has found a completely legal way to get some money back, without passing a new tax.

Yes, if you recently bought an expensive vehicle, then you're going to feel it the hardest for the next year or two, but the same is true with everything associated with a new vehicle, like insurance, part replacements, service, etc. It's one of the many considerations a person must take into account when purchasing a new vehicle.

If it's that bad, and you truly are unhappy, you could always move. (Boy, that sounds familiar. lol.)

Take care,
~Chris

I am trying to move. Cali is a nice place to visit, but I don't like living there.

I'm trying to move to the base in Washington. I'm glad I'm from Oregon, The DMV system there is much better. $30 for three years. PLus there is no late fee. Just $30 no matter what.

And that's a decision I totally respect. I firmly believe that if you are in a situation you don't like, it's your own doing, and it's your responsibility to do something about it. In your case, that means moving.

Take care,
~Chris

Texas has some of the best highways in the nation. That's because almost the entirety of the petrollium and gasoline tax goes directly into the roads and highways system. That's a multi-billion dollar tax bracket.

last i heard, it was almost 3 to 1, cars to people. You'd never believe that driving on most of the freeways, but get down around the 101/405 in the valley, and you will have found close to half of them. lol.

Been there, done that and I'd half to say I agree. I was in the Calabasas/Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village area on a couple of business trips and I just remember seeing more cars on one freeway than I'd ever had in my life. One other thing I noticed was how clean many of the cars were. People really seem to take to their automobiles more than us mid-west folks. I guess with no rain, and sunshine like 90% of the time a car wash lasts for weeks instead of hours like here in C-Bus.

Funny thing is, on one of my tirps to L.A., the USA Today ran a story on the busiest freeway interchanges in America and the 405/101 was like #2, I believe. Interestingly enough, Columbus' I-70/I-71 interchange in downtown made the top ten list.

Yeah, the freeways through L.A. and the valley get pretty bad. Most of them are 6 or more lanes in each direction, though, which makes them move, even if they are congested.

Next time you're in the T.O./Calabasas area, take the 101 west for about 30 minutes. When you hit the beach, you're in Ventura. Let me know ahead of time and I'll meet you for lunch down in the marina.

Take care,
~Chris

i bet I-4 made that list...traffic through orlando is nuts...youre battling two tiny lanes that have been under construction for 5 years with everyone going 20mph over ther the limit, a bunch of tourists not paying attention, old folks who cant see the road, college students driving like madmen, on an unkept highway....so you dodge debris left and right in this tiny fast paced highway and pray that the trucks that never look dont pass into your lane while youre in it, cuz theres no median to escape into....

that is why i always pay to drive the toll roads when im in orlando....I-4 is just wrong...lol

I did read recently that Florida had either 6 or 7 of the 10 deadliest traffic intersections in the country. Funny you should mention that. The study attributed it to the same things you did, basically.
