Info from C&L about new 76mm and conical filters..
I sent this to Lee Bender at C&L, his response is below:
I recently installed the 76mm package on my highly modified 91 Mustang, I am hoping for low 11's this year all motor NA. My question is why is the stock air box needed? I tried the meter with my 12" K&N concial unit that I made a shield for to keep it away from fan wash. The car popped and ran pretty bad as soon as I replaced it with the stock air box it ran much better all around, is it due to the surface area of the filter? Do or will you have a air tube for 36# or 38# calibration. I need to upgrade my injectors and was looking at those to sizes and would love to keep my new meter. Lee's response: As long as the filter was shielded, you should not have had any problem. We have other customers who run conical filters with this kit, with no problem. We do have a calibration for 36/38 lb injectors. We do not advertise this because most naturally aspirated applications will not require that much fuel. Your factory airbox with the panel filter flows 800-850 cfm. This is enough air to support more than 700HP naturally aspirated. If you have any other questions, please call. ------------------ Check Out My Site 91GT,Holley SysteMAX II Kit-Heads 2.02" x 1.60" port matched to a 1262,Anderson N-61,24#,76mm C&L,Full MAC exhaust 1-5/8" Long tubes,2-1/2" O.R H-Pipe,2 1/2" cat back, No A/C or PS or emissions, 12" K&N Filter,RNH PERFORMANCE Ram Air,Ron Davis Radiator,Full Suspension,S&W 8pt "X" brace,JAZ seats,3:73's,Welds..etc,4:30's and 31 splines coming very soon! |

I also called them, as I was having the same problems as Rick described. I got almost the exact same answer, right down to the 36/38lb injector calibration comments. The only thing I know is, I can't run that meter because the car runs so bad, but it runs great with other meters.

Hey Joe hows that beast doing? Ever since I went to the ugly factory set-up it has ran great, I am going to swap out the box and put my conical to see how it acts though.

Well Rick.. I ran into another problem today. It seems like my 190lph fuel pump didn't like seeing 8psi of boost on an already 300rwhp car and it took a dump on me. I was leaving for work today and it just cut out on me. No warning, nothing. I'm glad I was still in the neighborhood so I could just push it back to my driveway. Anyways, I gotta drop the tank tonight and put a 255lph in. I think it'll like that a little better.
How is everything with you? Fiance? Car? Well, I'm off to get dirty! Well this is just great. I have been wondering if it was my C&L meter causing my problems. My car is bucking at part throttle, surging badly at idle, and all sorts of crap. When it starts cold it finds and idle around 900rpm which is where I set it. But after it warms up and I stop for a light it'll be around 1200rpm and surge a bit. What gives?

Well good to hear you were in the neighborhood, I don't like leaving my car anywhere anymore either. Well like I siad last night the car is coming, still tweaking but it drives really good for this big *** cam but is is severe need of the 4:30's, which will hopefully be done in 3 weeks, I plan on racing at the NMRA's Ford Nationals in Maple Grove, PA. Lisa is doing great she and I are spending more time together now that the car is running and that is a huge stress reliever, well needed. How's your wedding plans going? How's your fiance?
Kevin- Buddy replace that cone filter with the air box and see if that helps, it did on mine. Did you see my reply to the T-% question over on The Corral, give it hell and get 12's! I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go 12's. ------------------ Check Out My Site 91GT,Holley SysteMAX II Kit-Heads 2.02" x 1.60" port matched to a 1262,Anderson N-61,24#,76mm C&L,Full MAC exhaust 1-5/8" Long tubes,2-1/2" O.R H-Pipe,2 1/2" cat back, No A/C or PS or emissions, 12" K&N Filter,RNH PERFORMANCE Ram Air,Ron Davis Radiator,Full Suspension,S&W 8pt "X" brace,JAZ seats,3:73's,Welds..etc,4:30's and 31 splines coming very soon! |

I need to take my car to some professionals and see what they think. Something's not right. I'll try the air box thing though, but if that helps it's going to really piss me off because I just got that ugly thing out of there!
As for the guys saying I won't see 12's they will be proven wrong. The rebuilt clutch packs and gears made a big difference alone so I know it's a low 13 car now. With slicks 12's will be a matter of putting the gas pedal down Look out 12's... Here I come!!!! ------------------ Too much to list. Kevin-I agree I hate the look of the factory box and was happy when it was gone but, if I need to have the box in there for the car to run good then I may attempt to make one from aluminum and polish it up, atleast it would look good.

My brother has the same meter and uses the Morosso cold air kit and has no problems at all. I think part of it is my TB. I made the new throttle plate for it and didn't put the small hole in it. I'm gonna try putting that in there and see what happens.
