need help quick...Will a EEC-IV computer from a non-HO 88 Cougar...
work on a HO engine that came from a '86 lincoln mark VII?
I got the engine last week, but the guy didnt have most of the wiring....he just cut most of it when he pulled the engine. I was able to find a '88 Cougar nn-HO at the junkyard that still had most of the wiring intact. I grabed the harness, the computer, and the injector wires. Anyone know if the computer or wiring is pretty much the same? The car I'm putting it in is an '86 Mustang 3.8l V6. I just pulled the engine out of it last night. I'd say thats a question for a local auto electric guy or maybe an email to one of the aftermarket computer chip mfgs ??
At best i'd guess the non HO computer won't have the timing curves optimized for your new HO motor ? Do the color codes on the wires match up ? If not you're probably fighting a losing battle. |

I think they match up for the most part....im not sure. I got a bunch of conncetors that dont have anything to go to....on both the engine side, and the wiring part from the Cougar.
I'm seriously thinking of just converting to carb....it would probaly be alot easier.... |

Well unless you're very experienced with automotive computer systems, that --"for the most part"-- will cause you more heartache than you can imagine !
There are surely down sides to carburation, but then again when you look under that hood and just see a carburator and some linkage instead of 400 miles of wiring and vacume tubing it might bring a smile to your face Question is can you toss your computer in your state on your vehicle and still pass emission rules ? Forgive me i'm from Southern Calif and in my state if you sneeze on it, it won't pass smog ! Good luck ! |

I live in a rural area, so I dont have to pass a smog test.
The only rule is that you have to have catalytic converters on cars that were made after '81. but I can always hollow those out. |

Even if you decide to convert you need to talk to the electrical guy at your local Ford dealer or something like that because there could still be issues. For instance i have a Dodge van that has the voltage regulator on the computer board so if i tossed the computer my alternator would go nowhere ! You may have guages or controls that are routed through the computer that you have to know about before you gut your puter and toss it in the trash !

www.stangparts.com has the correct computers for $150, but I bet you can find them even cheaper if you shop around at your local used parts dealers.

I installed my 90 gt HO engine in my father-in-laws 87 ford country squire wagon which had a non-ho 302 in it. We kept the non-ho computer in it. However, the two engines have completely different firing orders. You have to rewire both the spark plug wires and the fuel injectors at the engine harness. The car runs good this way, but the gas mileage is not what it should be. We are going to swap in a HO computer to see if that fixes things.
