Post Results: 97 Cobra vs. 2001 GT

My car is the 97 Cobra vert. (25,xxx miles)
His car is a 2001 GT Hardtop (18,xxx miles)
Both cars are 100% stock, (save a K&N).
His car is a 5 Speed.
Both of us are newbie drivers to the track and each of us had 1/2 tank of gas. This was my first time at the track and his 2nd or 3rd.

We raced twice against each other.
1st Race
Me------------------Him
r/t 1.22----------1.581
60' 2.271---------2.219
1/8 9.752---------9.595
MPH 77.12---------71.70

He got me this race, eventhough I was ahead the whole time and had a higher MPH. I spun all the way through second dammit. Racing on the street is a lot different than on the track. No ******* traction. By the time I seemed to get traction the race was over.

2nd Race
Me-------------------Him
r/t 1.026-----------1.159
60' 2.411-----------2.5
1/8 9.788-----------9.836
MPH 76.89-----------75.59

I still spun like mad in second, however, this time I let up on it in hopes it would bite. I guess we both did pretty bad this run. But the Cobra came out the winner!

My best time was
r/t 1.164
60' 2.187
1/8 9.488
MPH 77.86

All in all it was a great nite. Had a good time. I guess these times aren't too bad for a beginner. I need to learn how to drive the Cobra better. I didn't shift into 3rd on any of the runs. That might have been my downfall. But, I did wind her out to 7,000 in each gear.
Rev limiter kicked in once. (Good thing!)

Anyway, I know the results would be different with different drivers. But, with two average working guys, the cars are about the same. And that is what I wanted to see.

I ran an almost identical time to yours (9.48) and same mph (77) in my friend's '97 cobra...It was stock except for k&n...Get some good tires with that mph and you should run 9.0's...

That sounds like good times. I have a 01 GT with a Auto and i took it to the track bone stock not too long ago. It was my first time on the track too. I was very mad about my times. I was running 9.6's-9.8's. Then my last run out of 4 I ran low 9.4's that is spinning all the way through 1st and getting loose in second a little. Plus, the temp was about 93 degreess at 9:30 pm. Oh i about forgot that was at 77.xxmph.

Try shifting at 6500-6700 RPM. See how your times do then.

How quick can you shift, and how where you shifting? Grandma, speed, or power?

I have a 2000 GT (Check Sig) and when I race (Street) I usually ring her up to 5700-5800 RPM and speed shift (My friends say if they didnt know better theyd swear I had an Automatic cause I shift so quick )

WIth a 99+ GT I found that if you dont run second gear up to 5700 + RPM, your third gear accerleration kinda suffers. Well thats a GT, not a Cobra like you have, Lucky Dog.

EIther way, glad to hear you had fun, thats whats its all about FUN.

I have to disagree with the short shifting of the Cobra. You really do need to drive those cars like you stole them to get the best out of them.

Gears man, gears!!! Those cars NEED gears. 4.10's or 4.30's are the choice of people who know. You'll probably be in the 8's somewhere after those.

Unit could be right about not short shifting the Cobra. I never drove one, but after looking at dyno readings and ratings, and charts that you would loose less net power by shifting earlier than Redline.

What I did (May be wrong, but noticed a diffrence in seat of the pants and impromptu races) is take the RPM Range for which you shift at and the power produced at the starting RPM of the next gear, and averaged it out in increments and varations of the RPM shift points.

For example if your car builds its peak power at 6400 RPM at 270 HP, but when you shift takes you to 4300 RPM with 220 HP. While if you shift at 6700 RPM with 260 HP, it takes you to 4800 RPM wich has 237 HP.

See, your average power output is higher. But this might be diffrent in reality, you know how things go with Paper VS reality.

Seems to of worked for me. I know my use of grammar wasnt exactly up to specs, nor is my use of terms, but I'm starving and its dinner time. So if you would please excuse me.

I was speed shifting 1st -2nd. Not powershifting. I was shifting at 7,000 RPM's and I swear I never had traction until the end of the track. I guess I need to ease up on the gas until it hooks in second.
I'm runnin the BF street tires, not slicks, so that is probably part of the problem. On the street, shifting from 1st - 2nd, I get wheelspin, but it always seems to hook quick. Maybe the track was a little slick. I know the times aren't great, but dam, it sure was fun. And I didn't have to look over my shoulder for the
BLUE LIGHTS!!!

If I got 3.73's or 4.10's I guess I would also need a set of nittos, to get some traction. Gotta save that $$$.

There is no problem with what you're saying at all. The part you forgot was torque multiplication. The transmission gear ratios and how they affect torque multiplication. A car will not pull as hard in say 2nd gear at 5000rpm as it will in 1st gear.

Just looked at a few dyno runs, seems as though the Cobra drops off hard after 6700rpm. Maybe that is enough to outweigh the 7000rpm shifting.

I have a 99 Conv. that 8.60's to 8.70's. Have a friend with a 96 Cobra Conv. with 4:10's. He could only run 9.70's I drove his car (spun good bit but had to feather it out) I went a 9.06. All you really need is some practice. Then get some gears and stuff. When you get gears though it's like learning how to drive the car all over again. I got in mine had probably with spinning. Invested in Nitto Drag Radials helped tremedously.
Good luck.

Yeah, I wasnt thinking about the touque aspect of it. Dangit Unit, you bested me. ARGH

I do know thats one reason why I run second gear up to redline in my GT though, because if you shift to third at 5600-5700 from second, its not as snappy or peppys as running second up to 6000 then hitting third.

Cool

Facts:

My N/A, Stock-Motor Cobra runs 7.73 @ 88 MPH in the 1/8 mile. 1/4 mile in sig.
My most recent dyno numbers are 306 rwhp and 301 rwtq.
My shift-lite is set at 6800 rpms. I launch anywhere from 7000-7600 rpms.
Without a shift-lite, always run a DOHC Cobra up to 7000 rpms on the stock tach. Why you ask? Powerband and where you will end up after the shift is complete.
Yes, power does fall off rapidly after 6500 rpms on a stock DOHC. Although, mine is still above 280 rwhp at 7000 rpms.
DOHC Cobras need 4.56 gears, N/A or poweradder. More gear, if port-work has been done.

Any questions?

Later, Jason

Skyman,

Yes, I was at the track the same time he ran that pass.

That 99 Cobra belongs to Bob Cosby. He is a Moderator on Corral.Net. His car is also a Corral Project car too. He also runs the car in NMRA Factory Stock and ended the season 3rd in points and broke the record a couple times during the season. He also won 3 or 4 races in a row and the World Ford Challenge during the season as well.

He is an awesome driver. That 11.95 pass was done on 275/50/15 BFG drag radials. It also has a live-axle in place of the IRS. The 99's, in stock-motor form, will run faster than the 96-98's given similar mods and they definately need to ditch the IRS to do it.

If you think the 11.95 is impressive, just read one of the 2 major Mustang magazines in a couple months. All I can say is that he ran a new best! I need to let him drive my car.

Later, Jason
