DETONATION PROBLEM ON 95 STANG
I OWN A 1995 STOCK GT 5 SPEED. SINCE I BOUGHT IT I HAVE NOTICED A DETONATION PROBLEM UNDER ACCL. I WENT TO A NGK V-POWER PLUG WHICH IS HOTTER AND I THINK THAT WAS THE WRONG WAY TO GO. SO I WENT BACK TO A AUTOLITE STOCK PLUG. NOW IT IS BETTER BUT SILL CAN HEAR IT NOW AND THEN. I DID INSTALL FORD RACING 9MM WIRES, ROTOR AND CAP. OTHER THAN THAT IT IS ALL STOCK. I CLEANED THE EGR VAVLE, DID NOTHING. DO I NEED TO GO TO A COLDER PLUG OR WHAT?

You need to check your timing. See what it's at with the spout plug removed, and try backing off a couple degrees. Other than that, a higher octane gas should help.

I've read once the problem is on the SN95 computer which emphasizes fuel economy, not performance (that ridiculous rear end serves that purpose too). It tends to be worse when is very hot (or the engine is very hot). Even with 91 octane gas I've faced this. Maybe an octane booster? Let's hear the gurus to clear this up.

Well mine is still detonating. I've changed out the IAT and the TPS with no real change. Went out for a cruise on Saturday here in Dallas when the temp droped to about 90 (started to cloud over) and the car was fine. I pushed it really hard and had no problems.
Soon as the sun came out again and the temp went back up around 100, I had detonation again. I am running Exxon 93 octane fuel too. Could cool plugs help? ------------------ 1995 Mustang GT |
